Every year we are graciously invited to our Jolly friends home for their annual Kentucky Derby party. And their parties never disappoint! The bourbon flows freely, seersucker is ever present, and big hats and bowties are bountiful.

So, with those criteria in mind, here's what you need to throw a simple Derby-Do! Focus on the three D's: Drinks, Decor & Duds

Drinks.

The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.

The Old Forester Mint Julep Recipe

3 oz. Old Forester Mint Julep

0.75 oz. Simple Syrup

8-10 mint leaves

3 mint sprigs, far garnish

Woodford Reserve Classic Mint Julep

2 oz. Woodford Reserve®

1/2 oz. Simple Syrup

3 Fresh Mint Leaves

Crushed Ice

Express the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass.  To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon and crushed ice.  Stir. Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.

Decor.

Feel free to scour Pinterest for hours for decor inspiration. But I'm a fan of keeping things simple, clean and classic (and EASY).

  • Food & Beverage: Use plain white or clear plates and glasses, "fancy" silver plastic cutlery, and crisp white linens and cocktail napkins. Use white, wooden or silver serving platters to show case a selection of hors d'oeuvres, assorted cheese and fruits.

  • Floral Design: Use assorted white or clear glass vases full of spring time blooms. I particularly enjoy a bright seasonal assortment, floppy tulips, or full peonies. Or embrace the Derby-theme and decorate with red roses!

Duds.

When selecting your ensemble for Derby Day it's important to first consider your accessories. It all boils down to Will You or Won't You be wearing a hat/fascinator??

If you answered yes, then select your hat or hair piece FIRST. Then coordinate your dress to match accordingly. Do not make the rookie mistake of doing this the other way around.

If you answered no, then I encourage you to select an outfit or dress that reflects the whimsy and preppy spirit of the Derby. Consider donning bright colors, gingham check, seersucker, large florals, full skirts, cut-out lace, or ruffles. (Just don't do all of them at the same time).

Throwing a Derby party can be easy and stress-free. Just remember to keep in mind the 3 D's. And no matter the event you host, be ensure that you make some time for yourself. Enjoy the party! In this case, perhaps taste-test the Mint Juleps just before your first guests arrive!
